The real El Calafate experience is in the excursions — which can add up to $600,000–$800,000 ARS for someone doing 3 activities over 4 days. Tips for saving money in El Calafate
Flights to El Calafate booked 90–120 days ahead can be 40–60% cheaper than 2 weeks out. Use Google Flights with price alerts.
March, April, October and November have prices 20–40% lower than January with equally good weather and all excursions available.
The supermarket on Av. del Libertador has everything to prepare breakfasts and lunches at the hostel. You can save up to $50,000 ARS per day without sacrificing quality.
The restaurant inside the National Park has high prices. Packing your own sandwiches and snacks saves $20,000 to $40,000 ARS on glacier day.
If you're not doing the Minitrekking and just want to see the Walkways, the tourist bus costs $15,000–$20,000 ARS vs. $60,000+ for a private taxi.

El Calafate for foreign tourists: is it expensive?
For those traveling with dollars, euros or reais, El Calafate can be surprisingly affordable compared to other nature destinations worldwide.
Access to Perito Moreno Glacier (one of the most impressive glaciers in the world) with the Minitrekking costs around USD 230 per person. Equivalent destinations in Iceland, New Zealand or Alaska charge between USD 300 and USD 600 for a similar experience.
The biggest expense for the foreign tourist is usually the international flight to Argentina — which can cost between USD 500 and USD 1,500 from Europe or North America. Once in Argentina, El Calafate specifically is very affordable.
Cash or card in El Calafate?
El Calafate accepts credit and debit cards at most shops, restaurants and hotels. However:
- The National Park entrance accepts both forms of payment
- Some small grocery stores and kiosks are cash only
- Tips are always better in cash
- Craft markets generally cash only

El Calafate is not just about the glacier. Between excursions, or for travelers on a tighter budget, the town and its surroundings offer cultural and historical experiences at very low cost that few tourists know about.
🫐 The calafate legend — the origin of the name
The calafate is a shrub with small purple berries that grows throughout southern Patagonia. The Tehuelche legend says that whoever tastes the calafate fruit is destined to return to Patagonia. This is more than just a metaphor: it is the reason the city bears that name. In the center of El Calafate you can see the wild bushes with their violet berries, and if it is the season (January–February), tasting them is free and is one of the small rituals of the trip. Many tourists who do so confirm the legend — they come back.
🏛️ Historical Interpretation Center — free
The Historical Interpretation Center of El Calafate is a museum that narrates the region's history from the Tehuelche people to the present day, with special emphasis on the lives of the first settlers who arrived in the early 20th century. Entry is free or has a minimal charge. It is located in the town center and is often part of the "rest day" agenda between excursions. For culturally curious travelers, it can be the starting point to understand why El Calafate exists where it does.
🦙 The Tehuelche people and the Punta Walichu rock paintings
Long before December 7, 1927 — when El Calafate was formally founded as a town — Patagonia was inhabited by the Tehuelche people (or Aonikenk): nomadic communities who crossed the steppe hunting guanacos and rheas, and who left their mark in the rock paintings of Punta Walichu, on the shores of Lago Argentino. These ancient paintings can be visited on the City Tour + Punta Walichu — a low-cost excursion compared to glacier tours — and provide a fascinating human context to the entire visit.
🦩 Laguna Nimez — Patagonian flamingos 2 km from the center
Laguna Nimez is an ecological reserve just 2 km from the center of El Calafate, walking along the Lago Argentino waterfront. Entry costs $5,000–$10,000 ARS and it is the place to see Patagonian flamingos, steamer ducks, black-necked swans and dozens of bird species. It is ideal for a morning before an excursion or as a low-cost activity on a rest day. Many travelers discover it by chance while walking through town and end up spending hours there.
If your trip has 4 nights, consider using one of the days to explore the town, the waterfront and Laguna Nimez instead of doing an expensive excursion. The cost of that day drops to $30,000–$50,000 ARS (meals + Nimez entrance) and the experience of "feeling" El Calafate as a real town — not just an excursion base — is something many tourists regret not having done.
🐦 Fun fact: Charles Darwin visited Patagonia in 1833 aboard HMS Beagle and was fascinated by the vastness of the landscape.
