Cerro Frías Horseback Riding is a half-day excursion in the El Calafate area in which you ride across this hill on horseback while you marvel at spectacular views of the Andes Mountains, Lake Argentino, Mount Fitz Roy and the Torres del Paine.
Cerro Frías lies near El Calafate, on the way to the Perito Moreno Glacier and, since it is not part of the Andes Mountains, it lets you take in panoramic views of the Torres del Paine, Cerro Fitz Roy, Cordón de los Cristales, Brazo Rico, Brazo Norte and the main body of Lake Argentino, the Boca del Diablo and the Magallanes and Avellaneda peninsulas.
The excursion begins when you are picked up at your hotel in El Calafate and the 25 km drive to Cerro Frías gets underway. There, from Hostería Eolo, the horseback ride starts, crossing a meadow and climbing the hillside, spotting lenga forests and a wide variety of native flora and wildlife. After 30 minutes you already get sweeping views of the Valle del Centinela, Lake Argentino and the Torres del Paine.
The route keeps climbing to the middle of the hill, where there are cows, guanacos, hares and wild foals. After about 1.5 hrs on horseback you head down the mountain. In winter, depending on ground conditions due to accumulated snow, you may not reach the summit but rather an intermediate point, with equally amazing views.
Once you reach the base of the hill you will have free time at the covered barbecue area, where the included lunch (morning departure) or afternoon snack (afternoon departure) is served. After the tour, you head back to the town of El Calafate and your hotel.
The order and times may vary depending on the day's organization and ground conditions.
