📖 The excursion
Darwin Experience:
Kayak & Patagonian Estancia

Darwin Experience combines the thrill of kayaking with the natural history of Patagonia. In a double kayak you cover the same 15 km of the Río Santa Cruz that Charles Darwin explored in 1834 during the HMS Beagle expedition. The trip runs through the Patagonian steppe, with its cliffs, native wildlife (guanacos, flamingos, swans) and unique landscapes.

You set off by 4x4 from El Calafate toward Paraje Charles Fuhr, 40 km along Route 40. There the guides fit you out with a Gore-Tex dry suit, life vest, boots and gloves. After the technical briefing, you head down to the river for an 80-90 minute journey to Estancia Río Bote.

The experience ends with a full lunch at the estancia: provoleta, Patagonian steak, dessert and drinks included. Those who prefer not to paddle can ride along in the 4x4 and join the lunch. No previous kayaking experience is required.

🍽 Estancia menu — Estancia Río Bote
  • 🥖 Focaccia with eggplant dip
  • 🧀 Provoleta with tomato + salads
  • 🥩 Criolla-style striploin steak
  • 🍫 Chocolate mousse
  • 🥤 Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks

Kayaking at the glacier or on the Río Santa Cruz?

Which one is right for you?

If you are after a full-day adventure with history → choose Darwin Experience. A 15 km kayak on the Río Santa Cruz following the route Charles Darwin traveled in 1834, with lunch at an estancia and transfer included from your hotel. Ideal if you have some fitness (ages 16+).

If you want the experience in front of the glacier → choose the Perito Moreno Kayak. You paddle 1h30 among blue icebergs, just meters from the wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier. No prior experience needed (you go with a guide) and you can do it from age 12. A perspective of the glacier that very few get to live.
