Glaciar Sur Adventure is a new and exclusive excursion that reaches the Frías Glacier by combining trekking legs and rigid-inflatable boat rides through an almost unexplored glacial landscape, in the southern area of Los Glaciares National Park. It visits the Glaciers Amphitheatre, a natural wonder named for the glacial traces and moraines it displays, dating back more than 20,000 years.
The excursion starts early: we collect you from your accommodation in El Calafate with round-trip transfer included. The route begins along the old estancia road towards Lago Roca, inside the National Park and about 70 km from El Calafate.
Near Estancia Nibepo Aike you board a rigid-inflatable boat to sail across the South Arm of Lago Argentino to the southernmost end of the lake, where you disembark. Once on land you do an exclusive trek to Lake Frías; on arrival you board again to cross to the opposite shore and, finally, take another trek to the Grande Glacier.
There are several trekking legs adding up to around 6 hours and 14 km, with little elevation gain, crossing a valley of ever-changing surroundings. The route culminates at the Glaciers Amphitheatre, a true timeline of the glacial era, surrounded by the Grande, Cubo and Dickson glaciers.
There you enjoy the box lunch facing the scenery and then head back along the same trails and boats as on the way out. An adventure in a very little-known area of the Park, off the traditional circuit, in small groups.
