Long cruise along the Beagle Channel: sea lions, birds, Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse and the penguin colony of Martillo Island. ~5 hours.
This long cruise along the Beagle Channel is ideal for discovering Ushuaia and getting close to the wildlife of the End of the World. You will cruise among islands watching sea lions and birds, with the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse as the star, and you will also reach the penguin colony of Martillo Island, the main panoramic point of the excursion.
The cruise starts at the port of Ushuaia, a few meters from downtown, crossing the Bay of Ushuaia until reaching the Beagle Channel through Paso Chico. The first stop is Bird Island, where you can watch the Fuegian birdlife (skuas, black-browed albatrosses, steamer ducks, upland geese and gulls). The cruise then continues toward Sea Lion Island, with one- and two-haired sea lions; both islands belong to the Bridges archipelago. On reaching the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, the star of every End of the World photo, you see colonies of imperial and rock cormorants while the guide tells the story of the sinking of the SS Monte Cervantes.
The cruise then continues eastward, where in the distance you can see Puerto Almanza (Argentine side) and the Puerto Williams Naval Base (Chilean side). On reaching Martillo Island, the engines are turned off by the shore of the beach to watch the penguins in their natural habitat from the catamaran (gentoo and Magellanic penguins live together). There is no landing on the island: watching is from the boat.
Schedules and order may vary depending on the day's organization.
